Air Peace Seeks Probe Into Alleged Violence During Airport Picketing

Air Peace has asked the Federal Government, security agencies and aviation regulators to investigate alleged violence and disruption during the aviation unions’ industrial action at Nigerian airports on August 11. The airline said the action caused it losses exceeding ₦2 billion. At a media briefing in Lagos, Air Peace COO Oluwatoyin Olajide said the unions cited airlines’ outstanding 5% Ticket Sales Charge payments to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and alleged resistance to employee unionisation. She questioned why Air Peace was targeted when, according to her, both issues affect other airlines in the industry. Olajide said Air Peace employees had voluntarily chosen not to join a union and alleged that some staff were assaulted during the picketing, including a female employee who was reportedly left bruised and bleeding. She also criticised alleged calls by union members for passengers to avoid Air Peace and use other airlines.
