UN Women: Sexual Violence Against Nigerian Women Nearly Halved Since 2018
The latest Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows sexual violence against women fell from 9% in 2018 to 5% in 2024. Physical violence since age 15 declined from 31% to 19%, while intimate partner violence dropped from 36% to 23%. UN Women representatives credited the success to stronger advocacy by traditional and religious leaders. They engaged communities to reject harmful practices and promote gender equality, driving these declines over the past six years. Despite progress, UN Women warns that falling help-seeking among survivors highlights the need for better reporting systems, survivor-centred services and stronger justice, protection and psychosocial support. The organisation also announced new regional funding to tackle harmful social norms and technology-facilitated gender-based violence in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal.
