My Husband Put Me Through School—Now My Tailoring Business Earns More Than He Does
My husband encouraged me to return to school after we got married and had children. I later earned a first-class degree, started a tailoring business, and built it into a company with shops in two Nigerian states. Today, it brings in about ₦2 million to ₦3 million a month—more than my husband earns from his job and consulting work combined in some months. He has supported me at every stage, from paying for my education to buying the fabric and sewing machine I needed to start my business. We’ve been married for 36 years, and he still celebrates my success. Though I sometimes wish he would let me contribute more to household expenses, our different incomes have never caused a problem between us. Now that our children are grown and my business is established, I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree. My husband has promised to support me, but I hope to pay for it myself.
