Akwa Ibom Doctors Launch Indefinite Strike After EFCC Hospital Raid
The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has declared a total and indefinite strike across all public and private health facilities in the state. This action follows the alleged brutalization, arrest, and detention of Professor Eyo Ekpe and other staff at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital by operatives of the EFCC. Reports say masked officers fired gunshots inside the hospital, beat medical personnel, and confiscated phones of eyewitnesses. The association demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detained staff, a public apology from the EFCC, prosecution of officers involved, and N1 billion in damages for the physical, emotional, and institutional harm inflicted. No dialogue will be entertained until these demands are met. The NMA emphasizes that hospitals are sacred spaces and calls this strike a deterrent against future harassment of medical practitioners.
