Fanta’s Ritual Label: Marine Spirits and ‘Eze Nwanyis’

Fanta is one of Nigeria’s most popular soft drinks thanks to its unique flavor. Lately, however, some so-called spiritualists known as “Eze Nwanyis” (Queen Mother of the Water) have been using it in alleged marine spirit rituals. This practice has led many Nigerians to call Fanta “Mmanya mmuo mmili” (drink of the marine spirits). Some people now avoid the drink altogether, believing it carries a negative spiritual connotation. The big question is whether the bottling company is aware of this new meaning. Fanta remains a great soft drink, but charlatans should not be allowed to tarnish its reputation.
