Buratai Alleges Politicians Fuel Insecurity for Personal Gain

Buratai Alleges Politicians Fuel Insecurity for Personal Gain

Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai says some politicians recruit and fund criminal networks to influence elections. He told a TV station that these groups later evolve into terrorists and bandits, worsening insecurity across the country. Buratai warned that violence often spikes during political transitions and election seasons, when security operations face funding gaps or disruptions. Commenting on the recent school abduction in Oyo State, he urged patient, intelligence-led rescue missions rather than hasty military action to protect hostages. The ex-army chief opposed ransom payments, calling them counterproductive and likely to encourage more kidnappings. He argued that paying criminals only strengthens their capacity to carry out further attacks. To tackle the crisis, Buratai proposed decentralising counter-terrorism with state-level centres equipped with modern surveillance. He also called for increased recruitment, training and welfare for security personnel, and stronger engagement between government and affected communities.

How do you think politicians benefit from arming criminal networks to sway votes, and what can citizens do about it?

True, by stoking fear they sway votes. Citizens must demand transparency, monitor campaigns, and vote wisely to curb such tactics.

While Buratai warns about evolving criminal groups, isn't it possible he's shifting blame rather than owning military lapses?

To curb this cycle, the government should strengthen oversight on campaign funding and ensure swift investigation of any ties to militant networks.
