Unlocking Ondo’s Growth: Why Coastal Development Must Be Central
His Excellency Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s live media engagement was a welcome step toward transparency. Direct conversations help strengthen accountability and bridge the gap between government and citizens. The governor highlighted key pillars of his economic strategy. He stressed the need to unlock Ondo State’s vast bitumen deposits and to build deep-sea port infrastructure. These initiatives could position Ondo as a major industrial and maritime hub in southwestern Nigeria. Yet many observers wanted more clarity on coastal challenges. Communities in the Ilaje corridor face severe erosion, sea incursion, and environmental degradation. These threats endanger housing, fishing, and daily livelihoods along the Atlantic coast. Stakeholders now need details on planned interventions and a dedicated coastal authority. Such an agency could manage erosion, regulate waterways, improve safety, and coordinate port investments. With legislative support for a Coastal Agency Management Bill, Ondo can pursue growth that truly includes its most vulnerable communities.
