How Nigeria Can End the Cycle of Deadly Building Collapses
Two recent building failures in Rivers and Lagos expose a persistent national crisis. Investigations will show immediate causes, but the pattern is sadly familiar. Lives, livelihoods and public trust continue to be shattered. Experts blame poor workmanship, substandard materials, weak enforcement and corruption in the approval process. Some developers add floors without reinforcing foundations. Unqualified contractors often replace licensed professionals. Regulators must enforce approved plans, carry out regular inspections and sanction officials who overlook violations. Professional bodies should strip licences from those who endorse unsafe projects. The judiciary must prosecute negligent parties to deter future disasters. Digital approval systems and satellite monitoring can strengthen oversight, but they cannot replace on-site inspections. Citizens should verify building approvals and report suspicious construction. A collective commitment to safety is urgently needed to stop preventable deaths.
