Career Pressure Is Leaving Nigerian Children Without Proper Home Training — Prof Etta

Prof. Hannah Edim Etta of the University of Cross River State has warned that the pursuit of promotions, multiple jobs and financial security is leaving many Nigerian children without adequate guidance, discipline and emotional support. Speaking at UNICROSS’s 12th Inaugural Lecture, she said parents increasingly delegate childcare to caregivers, schools, social media and the internet. She described this gap as a “missing link” in family life, warning that the streets may fill the vacuum when parents are absent. Etta linked inadequate parenting to challenges such as juvenile delinquency, drug abuse and mental health struggles. She called for flexible work arrangements, parental leave and stronger support from religious and community leaders to help parents balance career demands with family responsibilities.
