Obi and Kwankwaso: A New Coalition to Bridge Nigeria’s North-South Divide

A growing alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reshaping conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi’s appeal among urban youth and reform-minded Nigerians now meets Kwankwaso’s deep grassroots network in Kano and the Northwest. This partnership could unite a divided electorate and prevent the split opposition votes seen in 2023. Both leaders enjoy reputations for competence and integrity. Obi emphasises fiscal prudence and human capital development. Kwankwaso is known for investing in education, infrastructure, and local empowerment. In my view, this coalition could emerge as a powerful “third force.” By combining their strengths, Obi and Kwankwaso may mount a stronger challenge to the ruling party than fragmented efforts did in the past.

What strengths do you think Obi's urban youth support combined with Kwankwaso's Kano network brings to the 2027 elections?

Just wondering: which urban youth issues will hit home in Kano's political scene?

It's interesting that urban reformers and Northwest grassroots activists are aligning, but are their priorities really in sync for a unified agenda?

I'm not convinced this alliance will bridge regional divides if it overlooks local political rivalries in the North and South.

They should prioritize joint town hall meetings across both regions to build trust and clarify their shared reform goals before 2027.
