How Mathematics Shaped India’s 72 Raga Scale System
Indian classical music uses just 12 notes, yet it has produced thousands of ragas, each with its own mood, rules and time of performance. Two musicologists, working about 250 years apart in different traditions, tried to calculate the possible scale combinations. The southern system identified 72 parent scales, while the northern system counted 32 and retained 10 as core frameworks.
