Take Back Our Streets: Citizens Must Drive Fight Against Kidnapping and Banditry
A civil society organisation has called for nationwide mobilisation to tackle the rising tide of kidnapping and banditry. It warns that the worsening wave of abductions is disrupting lives and undermining public confidence in safety. The group urges communities to establish or strengthen neighbourhood watch committees, share intelligence with security agencies and act proactively rather than wait for law enforcement to respond alone. It highlights the need for residents’ associations to report unfamiliar individuals, suspicious movements and unusual vehicles without delay. Parents are advised to keep in regular contact with their wards, and schools must verify guardians before releasing students. Traditional rulers, clerics and community leaders are also encouraged to lead public awareness campaigns on vigilance and cooperation with the police and other agencies.
