US Commits $240m for Rapid Humanitarian Aid in Nigeria and Other Crisis-hit Nations
The US Department of State has unveiled over $240 million in emergency funding for Catholic Relief Services to support communities facing conflicts, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and food insecurity. This rapid-response package aims to deploy life-saving assistance within 24 hours of a crisis. Nigeria, along with Burma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti and Sudan, will benefit from support across food security, healthcare, water and sanitation, shelter and other critical services. A portion of the funds will strengthen a global rapid-response fund to bypass lengthy procurement and approval processes. Officials say this initiative complements broader US humanitarian efforts, including billions channelled through the United Nations. CRS will leverage its network of more than 160 Caritas chapters to reach vulnerable populations even in difficult and politically sensitive environments.
