Remembering Bendel Insurance Stars Who Went on to Play for the Super Eagles
I watched several Bendel Insurance players in the local league who later became Super Eagles stars. Their rise showed how Nigerian league clubs can develop players ready to replace ageing national-team regulars when the system is properly managed. Pius Ikedia, Julius Aghahowa and Osaze Odemwingie were among the players I remember. Ikedia stood out at the time, carrying Bendel Insurance with his dazzling runs and skill. Aghahowa often came on as a substitute, and fans regularly shouted “Police” whenever he played. I also remember Friday Elahor, Austin Eguavoen, Henry Ogboe and Wilson Oruma from that era. Another exceptionally skilful Insurance player was Ikponwosa Omoregie. I still wonder why he did not make the move to Europe.
