IGP Disu Announces Move to Ban Fully Tinted Vehicles on Nigerian Roads

IGP Disu Announces Move to Ban Fully Tinted Vehicles on Nigerian Roads

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu says the Nigeria Police Force will soon enforce a ban on fully tinted vehicles nationwide. He cites security concerns, recalling that 26 of 27 cars seized during FCT ‘one chance’ operations were heavily tinted and linked to kidnappers and criminals. Disu warns that dark windshields endanger officers at checkpoints by hiding occupants. He stresses that the law only permits tints for genuine security or medical needs, not the near-opaque films now common. Vehicles imported with dark tints will also be targeted. The IGP also urged Nigerians to refrain from demoralising officers through video recordings amid rising security challenges. He outlined steps to end impunity on both sides and clarified bail surety rules, noting women can serve as sureties and no civil service rank is required. During a courtesy visit from the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA President Afam Osigwe welcomed collaboration but opposed renewable tint permits and private fees. Both bodies agreed on joint efforts to secure lives, property, and public trust.

The IGP's move seems reactive, focusing on tinted cars while many security gaps extend beyond vehicle windows.

I'm not convinced a blanket ban will deter criminals; they'll just find other disguise methods to evade police.

Enforcing a standard tint limit and clear certification could help officers spot illegal films while respecting privacy.
