Returnee from UK Shocked by Nigeria’s Skyrocketing Prices

Returnee from UK Shocked by Nigeria’s Skyrocketing Prices — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I moved back to Nigeria from the UK ten months ago and only now has the cost of living truly hit me. Fuel that cost ₦50,000 a week has jumped to ₦85,000. A basket of tomatoes went from ₦3,000 to as much as ₦13,000, and shombo leaped from ₦2,500 to ₦17,000 in days. Eggs, beef and even a carton of turkey have all seen steep increases. I feel embarrassed talking about my monthly spending because it makes me question my budgeting. But with prices climbing so fast, even a careful plan falls apart. How are people genuinely coping in this economy?

It's striking that fuel weekly bills jumped by nearly 70 percent while staple food prices more than quadrupled so quickly.

You could join bulk food cooperatives and plan carpool schedules to share fuel costs and reduce overall spending.
