Your Salary Increased by ₦200,000: Invest, Save or Upgrade Your Lifestyle?
When my income increases, I try not to let lifestyle inflation consume the entire difference. If I moved from earning ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 monthly, I would give the extra ₦200,000 a deliberate purpose: emergency savings, debt repayment, long-term investments and some room to enjoy life. I would not invest money I may need soon. An emergency fund provides quick access to cash for unexpected expenses, while investments should serve longer-term goals. Before investing, I would also understand the product, its risks, fees, liquidity and how it generates returns. High returns often come with higher risk. A realistic budget creates the margin needed to save and invest consistently. I would focus on building financial habits over time rather than chasing quick gains or investing simply because an option is popular. If your income increased by ₦200,000 tomorrow, would you invest it all, save first, pay down debt, or split it between your goals and lifestyle?
