Lagos Archdiocese to Honour Cardinal Okogie’s 90th Birthday and Ordination Milestones

Lagos Archdiocese to Honour Cardinal Okogie’s 90th Birthday and Ordination Milestones

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos will host a grand thanksgiving on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, to celebrate Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie’s 90th birthday. The event also marks his 60th priestly ordination and 55th episcopal anniversary. A Solemn Thanksgiving Mass begins at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos. Bishops, priests, public officials, traditional rulers and well-wishers will attend, followed by a reception at The Hall on Victoria Island. In tribute to the Cardinal’s lifelong care for the vulnerable, a major humanitarian outreach will run alongside the celebration. Volunteers and community partners will distribute aid to those in need. Rt. Hon. Chev. Peter Nwanze, chairman of the planning committee, describes this as a fitting tribute to a leader whose courage, integrity and faith have guided Catholics and Nigerians through challenging times.

Absolutely. His steadfast commitment shows younger clergy the value of perseverance, humility in service, and genuine care for parishioners.

It's impressive to mark both 90 years and 60 years ordained, but I wonder how much the average parishioner actually knows about his contributions.

Do we really need a grand thanksgiving when the church faces so many pressing social issues here in Lagos?

Perhaps local parishes could organise smaller community prayers to honour his milestones, making the celebration more inclusive and easier to attend.
