Nigerian Navy Intercepts Three Stowaways Near Lagos Coast
The Nigerian Navy successfully intercepted and rescued three men hiding aboard the MSC Stella about five nautical miles off the Lagos Fairway Buoy. The operation was carried out by personnel of NNS Beecroft after an intelligence alert from the Western Regional Control Centre. According to Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspects had boarded the vessel at Tin Can Island Port in the early hours of April 17. They were identified as Aguru Michael (27, Beninese), Soye Monday (25, Ondo State) and Kentobou Peter (22, Delta State), and are believed to have planned to stow away for an illegal trip to Europe. The trio is now in custody at NNS Beecroft undergoing investigation under extant laws. This action adds to recent successful interventions, including a rescue after a collision in Bayelsa and the recovery of three stowaways from another vessel in March. The Navy emphasizes its ongoing commitment to maritime safety, security and continuous surveillance of Nigeria’s territorial waters.
