Nigerian Universities Urged to Tackle Contract Writing and Research Integrity Gaps
Academic leaders at the 68th meeting of the Committee of Provosts and Deans of Postgraduate Colleges and Schools in Nigerian Universities have called for stronger action to protect academic integrity in postgraduate education. Speaking at the meeting hosted by Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun State, the chairman of the National Universities Commission Governing Board, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, warned that pressure to publish is encouraging shortcuts, including contract writing, predatory publishing and paper mills. He said universities must strengthen research ethics training, supervision, governance and access to research resources. He added that technology can support plagiarism checks and record management but cannot replace sound academic judgement. Participants also identified inadequate funding, weak infrastructure, inconsistent supervision and long completion periods as major challenges facing postgraduate education in Nigeria.
