Blackberries and Raspberries: Understanding Rubus Plants
Rubus is a large group of flowering plants in the rose family. It includes blackberries, raspberries, dewberries and other brambles. These plants grow in forests, grasslands, garden edges and cultivated farms across many regions. Most Rubus plants have arching or trailing stems, compound leaves and prickles that protect them from grazing animals. Their white or pink flowers attract bees and other pollinators. After pollination, they produce fruits that differ in colour, flavour and texture. Blackberries usually remain attached to their central core when picked, while raspberries separate from it and have a hollow centre. Beyond their value as fresh fruit, jams and drinks, brambles provide food and shelter for birds, insects and small animals. They also supply dietary fibre, vitamins and antioxidant compounds.
