Civil Rights–Era Klan Artifacts Found in Mississippi Public Safety Closet
Officials at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety uncovered a hidden suitcase in an old headquarters closet. It contained a KKK robe, meeting notes, ledgers, propaganda leaflets and membership records dating to the 1960s. Investigators also found the Kloran handbook, with meeting diagrams and coded notes to conceal identities. Local media contacted the family of Byron De La Beckwith, convicted for the 1963 killing of Medgar Evers, and they confirmed the handbook’s authenticity. The materials have been transferred to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Authorities say this discovery offers a stark reminder of the state’s past and will aid future historical research.
