Why Catholics Honour Saints’ Relics Without Worshipping Them

Catholics, please explain this without insults: why is carrying or honouring a saint’s skull or other relic during a service not considered idolatry? Catholic teaching distinguishes worship from veneration. Worship belongs to God alone. Relics, statues and images are not regarded as gods or as having power independent of God. They are honoured because of their connection to people believed to have lived holy lives. Catholics compare this to keeping a late parent’s photograph, Bible or personal item. The object is not the person, but it can carry deep meaning. They also point to biblical examples such as Joseph’s bones being preserved, God’s power working through Elisha’s bones, and healings linked to objects associated with Paul. This does not mean every practice is beyond criticism. Catholics themselves reject superstition and the idea that a relic has magical power. Disagreement is valid, but it should begin with an accurate understanding of what Catholics say they believe.
