Nigerian-Born Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi Becomes First Black Woman to Earn PhD in Robotics at University of Michigan

Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, has become the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Robotics from the University of Michigan. At the College of Engineering convocation, she credited teachers, friends, family, mentors and role models for supporting her journey. She also urged fellow graduates to recognise the people who helped them succeed. Beyond her research, Dosunmu-Ogunbi was recognised for mentorship and community service. She received the College of Engineering’s Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award, served as a robotics outreach ambassador from 2021 to 2023, and was inducted into the Bouchet Society. She is now interviewing for faculty roles and hopes to use engineering to create positive social impact.
