US to Move Routine Visa Processing From Abuja to Lagos From August 1, 2026

The United States says routine visa services at its embassy in Abuja will be moved to regional hubs from August 1, 2026. Nigerian applicants will still be able to access routine visa services in Lagos. The change covers nonimmigrant visas, including tourist, business and petition-based visas, as well as immigrant visa categories such as family, employment, fiancée and diversity visas. The US says the move is intended to centralise screening and visa processing. The embassy in Abuja will remain open, and visas that have already been issued will not be affected. Applicants in Abuja who need appointments from August 1 are expected to use Lagos or another designated processing location. The change may increase travel costs and appointment pressure for applicants outside Lagos, especially given Nigeria's high volume of US visa applications.
