Rotary District 9127 and POWA Train 150 Abuja Women on Menstrual Hygiene and Reusable Pad Production
Rotary District 9127, in partnership with the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) FCT and the Rotary Club of Abuja Harmony, trained 150 women and girls in Abuja on menstrual hygiene and the making of reusable sanitary pads. The workshop aims to improve menstrual health, reduce period poverty, and equip participants with income-generating skills. Immediate Past District Governor Mike Ukachi, the project initiator, explained that sponsorship from Fragrance Oil Int’l Manchester UK supports the broader public health goal. He noted that a similar programme trained 400 schoolgirls last year and that the next phase will reach 3,000 girls in Jos. The initiative is fully funded through community reinvestment by the sponsor. Sewing machines at the Rotary centre—and two donated to POWA—will enable ongoing training and local production of reusable pads. Rotary Club Charter President Francis Umeh highlighted the pads’ cost-effectiveness, safety, and eco-friendliness. Future plans include menopause awareness and expanding the programme across more states to empower vulnerable women and girls.
