Caesar Told His Captors to Raise His Ransom: Would You Charge What You’re Worth?
According to Plutarch’s account, a young Julius Caesar was captured by pirates while travelling to Rhodes. They demanded 20 talents as ransom, but he reportedly laughed and told them to ask for 50 because they had underestimated him. While his people raised the money, he stayed with the pirates for more than a month. He gave speeches, expected them to listen, and repeatedly said he would return for them after his release. Once freed, he raised ships, tracked them down and had them arrested. The part that stands out is his refusal to accept the price others placed on him. Many people undercharge for work because they fear a client will leave. Then that low amount becomes the figure others expect to pay. What is the lowest you have charged for work you knew was worth much more, and why did you name that price?
