Anambra to Upgrade Blessed Iwene Tansi Shrine into International Pilgrimage Centre
The Anambra State Pilgrims Office plans to transform the Blessed Iwene Tansi Shrine in Aguleri into a major international pilgrimage destination. Mr Odira Ezeh, Senior Special Assistant on Pilgrims to Governor Soludo, led discussions with Cardinal Peter Okpaleke of the Ekwulobia Diocese to strengthen collaboration and restore public confidence. Dedicated to Nigeria’s first beatified priest, the shrine draws thousands of devotees for relic veneration, Mass and spiritual healing. The Pilgrims Office believes the site has the historical and spiritual significance needed to rank alongside renowned global pilgrimage centres. Under the state’s Community Public–Private Partnership model, private investors are invited to help develop infrastructure. The plan includes a Pilgrimage Exchange Programme to attract visitors from Nigeria and beyond, and a Lottery Scheme to expand access for deserving citizens. Leaders expect this will boost religious tourism, increase internally generated revenue and create youth employment.
