NAFDAC Joins £3.7m Research Project to Detect Fake and Degraded Vaccines

NAFDAC has joined an international research consortium awarded £3.7 million by the UK Medical Research Council to develop better ways of detecting substandard, degraded and falsified vaccines. The three-year project is led by the University of Oxford’s Medicine Quality Research Group. Partners include Obafemi Awolowo University, the UK medicines regulator, the University of East London and a research unit in Thailand. In Nigeria, the project will support NAFDAC’s post-marketing vaccine surveillance through new screening tools, laboratory testing and studies on the cost-effectiveness of different methods. The research is expected to help regulators verify vaccine quality across the supply chain, strengthen immunisation programmes and improve public confidence in vaccines.
