University of Ibadan Mourns Renowned Linguist Emeritus Prof. Ayo Bamgbose
The University of Ibadan has announced the death of Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, one of Africa’s foremost linguists, at the age of 94. The university described him as an eminent scholar and trailblazer whose work advanced linguistics, higher education and intellectual development in Nigeria and beyond. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1971 to 1973 and was the founding president of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. Bamgbose was a recipient of the Nigerian National Order of Merit and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. The University of Ibadan awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2017. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, said Bamgbose’s legacy would continue to inspire academics and researchers for generations.
