How Fasting and Prayer Work Together in Biblical Teaching
Fasting and prayer are closely linked spiritual practices in Scripture. Prayer is communication with God, while fasting means voluntarily setting aside food or other comforts to seek Him with greater focus and dependence. Biblical fasting is not meant to manipulate God or attract public praise. It is an expression of humility, surrender, repentance and spiritual hunger. In Matthew 6, Jesus taught His followers to fast discreetly, with their attention directed toward God rather than people. Scripture records fasting in key moments: Moses fasted while receiving God’s commandments, Esther called for fasting when her people were in danger, and Daniel fasted while seeking understanding. Jesus also fasted before beginning His public ministry, while the early church combined prayer and fasting when seeking divine direction.
