Healing After Assault: Emmanuella’s Journey of Courage
This monthly series shares firsthand stories of rape and sexual violence survivors. It aims to empower survivors to speak their truth and to raise public awareness of the crisis facing women and girls in our society. I’m Emmanuella. I lost my parents young and relied on family to keep my dreams alive. I built a career in accounting and thought I had overcome my hardest trials—until someone I trusted betrayed me. After the assault, I was overwhelmed by fear, guilt, and flashbacks. Reporting to the police led me to the WARIF Centre, where I received free medical care and counselling. Safe sessions and group therapy helped me reclaim my confidence and see that the violence was never my fault. My healing continues, but today I stand stronger. If you or someone you know has been affected, support is available. Visit the WARIF Centre in Yaba or call the 24-hour confidential helpline at 0800-9210-0009.
