1 / 7

More than 40 suspected bandits were reportedly killed after local hunters and the Katsina State Community Watch Corps repelled a coordinated attack on Guga Village in Bakori LGA, Katsina State, on July 26, 2026. Security sources said more than 200 armed attackers, allegedly linked to bandit kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki and the Ado Aleru network in neighbouring Zamfara, stormed the community. Acting on prior intelligence, the security team engaged them in a gun battle and forced them to retreat. Reports also indicated that several commanders were killed and that Aiki sustained gunshot injuries, though this has not been independently verified. Five hunters were killed during the operation, including Idris Ibrahim Babawo. The Katsina State Government commiserated with their families and described them as patriots who died defending their communities. Clearance operations and heightened surveillance are ongoing, while authorities say calm has returned to Guga and nearby areas.

The reported bandit casualty figure is significant, but the immediate concern should not be reduced to numbers when residents and local hunters have paid such a cost.

Authorities should strengthen early-warning channels, patrol coordination, and support for the Community Watch Corps so villages can report threats before attackers arrive.
