Nigerian Navy Celebrates 70 Years with Over 100 Ships and Boats
The Nigerian Navy marked its 70th anniversary in Onne, Rivers State, celebrating growth from just 11 vessels in 1956 to more than 100 warships and boats today. Rear Adm. Ebiobowei Zipele highlighted the service’s resilience and dedication in protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and curbing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea for over three years. He noted that ongoing acquisitions of warships, helicopters and drones will further boost maritime security. Zipele stressed that securing Nigeria’s vast maritime domain requires collaboration. He praised support from agencies like NIMASA, NPA, NCS and NIS, and lauded government backing for improved operational resources. He encouraged prospective recruits to embrace sacrifice and patriotism, reminding them that the navy’s successes rest on collective effort and commitment to national service.
