Zamfara Grants Six-Month Maternity Leave to Boost Breastfeeding and Child Health

Zamfara Grants Six-Month Maternity Leave to Boost Breastfeeding and Child Health

The Zamfara government has approved a six-month maternity leave for female civil servants to promote exclusive breastfeeding and enhance maternal and child wellbeing. Announcing the policy in Gusau, the State Head of Service said the move reflects the governor’s commitment to reducing child malnutrition and supporting mothers during the perinatal period. Last year, the state also provided significant counterpart funding for nutrition interventions. Civil society groups praised the decision as a milestone in maternal and child health. They highlighted that extended leave will allow mothers to bond with their newborns, recover physically, and prevent postpartum depression while ensuring infants receive vital nutrition. The state pledged continued collaboration with partners to sustain and expand nutrition programmes and protect future generations’ health.
