Why does the phrase “I will marry once and marry right” seem more common among women? This question often sparks debate about how men and women approach marriage in Nigeria. Many women may think about the engagement ring, the wedding ceremony, gifts, congratulations and the security of building a home with a partner. Many men, on the other hand, may immediately consider bride price, wedding costs, increased household expenses and wider family responsibilities. These are broad generalisations, and they will not apply to everyone. Still, do financial pressure and social expectations make marriage feel more burdensome to men than to women?
