Lagos Becomes First State to Secure Permanent Rail Operating Licence
The Lagos State Government has broken new ground as the first sub-national authority in Nigeria to win a permanent railway operating licence from the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Under the licence, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) will formally operate the Red Line rail service and gain approval to run additional passenger and freight routes under a regulated framework. NRC Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa described the move as a watershed moment, marking Nigeria’s shift to a modern, multi-operator rail system under international standards. He noted that Lagos met all safety, technical and operational criteria after successfully completing its temporary licence assessments. LAMATA’s Managing Director, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, revealed plans to roll out three new train sets. This expansion will boost daily Red Line trips from nine to 24 and transport up to 200,000 commuters when fully operational.
