Nigeria’s Plan to Become Africa’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Export Hub
The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria announced plans for Nigeria to leverage its 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves to produce blue hydrogen. The goal is to not only meet domestic demand but also export clean hydrogen to other African nations. Speaking at the three-day Low-Carbon Hydrogen Economy Summit in Abuja, he highlighted a predicted $50 billion global market and Nigeria’s role as a Project Executing Entity under UNIDO’s Clean Hydrogen Programme. The summit marks an acceleration in Nigeria’s hydrogen strategy, following its 2023 establishment of a dedicated hydrogen committee. Officials stressed the need for a clear regulatory framework and robust data to support infrastructure, investment and job creation. Representatives from the Ministry of Innovation, the EU delegation and the National Bureau of Statistics outlined next steps for policy finalisation, technical assistance and evidence-based planning to drive the country’s clean energy transition.
