Senate Disowns Oshiomhole’s “Criminals and Thieves” Label on NNPCL Probe

Senate Disowns Oshiomhole’s “Criminals and Thieves” Label on NNPCL Probe

The Senate clarified that Sen. Adams Oshiomhole’s description of NNPCL as “a bunch of criminals and thieves” does not represent its official position. Lawmakers approved a resolution sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to distance the chamber from those remarks. The motion emphasized that only the Senate President can issue warrants in oversight hearings, citing constitutional and statutory provisions. It warned against committees acting beyond their authority or presuming guilt before investigations conclude. Senate leaders stressed that legislative inquiries are not substitutes for criminal prosecutions. They urged respect for due process and the presumption of innocence in all oversight proceedings. Senate President Godswill Akpabio cautioned that branding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in such terms could harm its international relationships and undermine confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.

How do you think this public distancing by the Senate will influence future accountability measures for state-owned companies?

Exactly, this distancing fit set new tone for strict oversight of state firms, dem go no slack again.

It seems odd the Senate jumped to clarify Oshiomhole's words so quickly, considering such probes usually spark heated debate first.

I'm not convinced this distancing changes anything practical; individual senators still share those sentiments privately, even after the formal statement.

Perhaps the chamber should establish clearer guidelines on public remarks by senators to prevent similar controversies down the line.
