Texas Appeals Court Says Schools Can Display Ten Commandments
A US appeals court has upheld a Texas law requiring public schools to post the Bible’s Ten Commandments in every classroom. The 120-page decision found the mandate does not infringe on students’ or parents’ religious freedoms. Opponents, including the ACLU and families of diverse faiths, argued that religious instruction belongs to parents and faith communities, not public schools. They had secured a district court injunction, which the Fifth Circuit has now reversed. Judges ruled the law does not violate the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution. The case, praised by Texas’s attorney general, could still reach the US Supreme Court for a final verdict.
