Court Refuses Ward Leaders’ Bid to Bar Senator Ireti Kingibe

Court Refuses Ward Leaders’ Bid to Bar Senator Ireti Kingibe

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed an application by African Democratic Congress (ADC) ward leaders in Wuse to bar Senator Ireti Kingibe from party activities. He ruled that Senator Kingibe must be notified and given the chance to defend herself before any prohibition can be granted. The judge held that requests to restrain political actors must be exercised judicially. He ordered the plaintiffs—Okezuo Godfrey Anayo and Isaiah Ojonugwa Samuel on behalf of Wuse Ward executives—to serve Senator Kingibe with all court processes. A hearing date was set for April 20, 2026. The ward leaders had alleged that Senator Kingibe was suspended for anti‐party activities and gross misconduct. They sought an interim injunction to stop her from attending meetings or using party resources. In response, Kingibe filed a preliminary objection challenging the suit’s validity.

It seems odd that the court prioritized formal notification over addressing the ward leaders' deeper grievances about party conduct.

I think we shouldn't dismiss the ward leaders' move as purely procedural. They might have genuine concerns about internal fairness.

Party officials should set clear timelines for responses and ensure transparent hearings to prevent similar disputes from escalating in future.
