US Military Cuts Recognized Faiths from Over 200 to 31
A recent memo from the US Department of Defense has streamlined the list of faith codes in the Military Chaplain Corps. Undersecretary of Defense Anthony Tata ordered the change to replace more than 200 recognized religions with a concise list of 31, aiming to improve chaplains’ ability to support service members. The revised list still covers major world religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and a variety of Christian denominations, as well as non-religious categories like agnosticism. Officials say most service members fell under only six faith codes, making the old system impractical. Alongside the faith code update, the Pentagon instructed chaplains to wear religious insignia instead of rank badges. This move emphasizes their primary role as spiritual advisors rather than military officers.
