Former LASU VC Says Public Universities May Need ₦1m Annual Tuition to Be Self-Sustaining

Former LASU Vice-Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello says public universities seeking financial independence may need to charge at least ₦1 million per student annually. She said LASU’s internally generated revenue rose from about ₦3 billion in 2021 to ₦13 billion during her tenure. However, the university’s monthly payroll now exceeds ₦1 billion, making it difficult to meet its obligations through internally generated revenue alone. She argued that universities must invest heavily to maintain academic standards. The debate comes as the Federal Government urges institutions to raise funds through research grants, endowments, alumni support, philanthropy and industry partnerships, rather than relying mainly on tuition and government allocations. The proposal is not a government directive. It raises fresh questions about whether public universities can remain affordable for Nigerian students and families.
