Why Obidient Supporters Have Become Highly Insultive Online
The Obidient movement grew rapidly online after Peter Obi entered the 2023 presidential race. Young Nigerians rallied behind his message, but the group’s public image soon became linked to insults, threats and mob-like behavior. Anonymity on Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook rewards harsh takedowns. Without central leadership or party structures, insults often count as proof of loyalty. The focus on outrage over nuance has shaped a culture where aggression is treated as activism. This trend risks alienating undecided voters and undermining the movement’s political goals. Building bridges across ethnic and regional divides requires persuasion, not abuse. A shift toward civil dialogue would strengthen the movement’s credibility.
