Pope Leo Denounces Abysmal Prison Conditions in Equatorial Guinea
Pope Leo condemned the dire living conditions in Equatorial Guinea’s prisons during the final stop of his four-nation African tour. Addressing about 100,000 worshippers on April 22, he urged respect for human dignity and sent a message of hope to hundreds of inmates in a rain-soaked prison courtyard. He told prisoners they are not alone, reminding them that families and people outside were praying for their release. As he departed, inmates drenched by rain cried out “freedom.” Later, he visited a memorial for victims of a 2021 military base explosion that killed over 100 people. At the Bata stadium, he stressed respect for every citizen’s rights. Amnesty International has reported that prisoners there face routine beatings and that many detainees disappear without trace.
