Partners in Proclamation: How Two African Voices Shaped the Abolition Movement
Scripture: Luke 4:18 NKJV – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me… He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives.” In 1780s London, former slaves from different parts of Africa—Igbo-born Olaudah Equiano and Fante-born Ottobah Cugoano—joined forces to expose the cruelty of the slave trade. Their ground-breaking narratives and radical pamphlets rallied British public opinion and helped pave the way for the Slave Trade Act of 1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. As members of the “Sons of Africa,” they used the only weapons available—the written word—to turn personal suffering into a moral call for freedom. Their witness reminds us to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Let us pray: Father, grant us boldness to use every gift and platform to champion truth and justice. Raise us faithful partners who will stand together in proclaiming liberty, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
