Kogi Widow Recounts Losing Husband and Two Children After Suspected Contaminated Amala

Kogi Widow Recounts Losing Husband and Two Children After Suspected Contaminated Amala

A widow in Ohuepe, Okehi LGA of Kogi State says her husband and two children died after the family ate amala made from cassava flour. She survived because she ate only a small portion, while her four-year-old son did not eat the meal. She said those who ate the food developed severe weakness, vomiting and stomach pains the next day. Her husband and children were taken to hospital but died within hours. A similar incident was reported in Ikoyi, Ihima, where four children allegedly died after eating another cassava-flour meal. Kogi authorities say food samples have been sent for laboratory tests, while an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the deaths.
