Nigeria Must Fund Healthcare and Support the Workers Who Save Lives
For many Nigerian families, getting medical care is still difficult. High treatment costs, medicine shortages, poorly equipped facilities and limited access to qualified health workers can turn treatable illnesses into emergencies. Healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and community health workers, are central to the country’s wellbeing. Delayed salaries, inadequate equipment and overwhelming workloads can affect the quality and continuity of care they provide. Nigeria’s under-five mortality rate was estimated at 115.6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024. Strengthening healthcare requires more than building hospitals. It also requires reliable funding, affordable access to care and better welfare for the professionals protecting mothers, children and communities.
