Jesus on the Cross: John 19:28-37 – “It Is Finished”
As Jesus hung on the cross, he knew the Scriptures had to be fulfilled. In his final moments he declared, “I am thirsty,” and after receiving a drink of wine vinegar he proclaimed, “It is finished.” The day of Preparation for the Sabbath was near. To avoid leaving bodies on the crosses, the soldiers broke the legs of the other two men but found Jesus already dead. Instead, a soldier pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out. A witness has confirmed these events to fulfill prophecy: not one of his bones would be broken, and they would look on the one they have pierced. These verses show the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus’ death.
