Kano Sets Up Diphtheria Response Committee, Mobilises Traditional Rulers for Vaccination

Kano Sets Up Diphtheria Response Committee, Mobilises Traditional Rulers for Vaccination

The Kano State Government has formed a special committee to coordinate the response to reported diphtheria cases and deaths, especially in Rano Local Government Area. The committee will investigate cases, strengthen surveillance, improve daily reporting and help prevent the disease from spreading to neighbouring LGAs. Health officials have also enlisted traditional rulers across Kano’s four emirates to encourage vaccine acceptance, early reporting of suspected cases and prompt treatment at health facilities. Authorities say many recorded cases involved children who missed routine immunisation or were taken late for proper medical care. Traditional healers and barbers have been urged not to attempt treatment or traditional procedures on suspected diphtheria patients. Kano has requested nine million vaccine doses, while the Federal Ministry of Health has deployed 500,000 doses and a task force to support response efforts in Kano and Katsina.
